Minigolf + Powerups Game

What the putt?!

ABOUT:

“Minigolf plus powerups” (Stylized as Minigolf + Powerups)  is a print and play game I created that adds gameplay modifiers to the traditional game of minigolf, such as swapping places with other players or holding the golf club upside down! This spices up your next minigolf outing into a game of unexpected twists, turns, betrayal and triumph! The game includes original never-before-seen systems to “roll dice” using the golf ball or golf pencils. That means no extra equipment is needed, all you have to do is print and play!

OBJECTIVE:

My goal when designing this project, and my general game design philosophy, revolves around using familiar concepts and objects that many people are already familiar with, and then putting a new spin on these ordinary objects and ideas by viewing them through an extended lens of play. A modern take on timeless and accessible folkgames. The design for this project would need to embody this design philosophy.

PROCESS: The Logo

Because modern golf cards do not use much imagery, I designed the logo for the game to be very stylized and full of motion, using juxtaposition to break away from an expected design language to say: “This isn’t your average game of minigolf!” After sketching out several iterations on paper, the logo was vectorized and incorporated into the design.

PROCESS: The Card

The design process began with research of traditional golf score cards, by embracing their existing design language, the game would become easier to pick up and be understood by a wider audience. The information collected from this research was used to select colors, fonts, and visual effects.

PROCESS: The Mockup

To create a customized visual mockup for the project, a free to use stock image of a minigolf club was extracted from its background scenery. After being added to the mockup file, the lighting, shadows, color and length of the golf club were punctiliously altered manually to create the appearance of being included in a real product photoshoot next to a printed copy of minigolf with powerups.

OUTCOME:

“Minigolf + Powerups” had a very successful launch, and has continued to garner downloads each month since! If you would like to try it yourself, you can visit the games page or click the link below.
